DSM and the Struggle for a Working Peoples' Political Alternative

In stock

£9.99
Price incl. VAT, excl delivery

DSM and the Struggle for a Working Peoples' Political Alternative is a compilation of the written ideas and perspectives of the Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM) for the liberation of the working and poor masses of Nigeria, Africa and internationally, from capitalist and imperialist exploitation.

These are not just dry treatises but political, agitational and programmatic statements and articles published in the organs of our political tendency - first known as Labour Militant, then Militant from 1995 and Socialist Democracy from 1998.

As mobilization and mass education documents, they were used to intervene at barricades and protests as well as during strikes and meetings of workers and youth activists at different stages in the development of the oppressed and exploited peoples of Nigeria. These struggles were waged at one point - and indeed for a prolonged period - against military despotism and then since 1999, against the anti-poor capitalist civilian ruling elite who took over power from their military counterparts.

The compilation covers the 27-year period of our Marxist tendency, its role and interventions in the struggle of Nigeria's working masses. It was a period hall-marked by the offering of appropriate perspectives, slogans and programmes in the course of the struggle aimed at ending capitalism and enthrone socialism in Nigeria.

Unison Bureaucracy Unmasked: The Defend the Four Story

In stock

£5.00
Price incl. VAT, excl delivery

In 2007, four trade unionists from different UNISON branches were publicly and unjustly accused of racism. Yet all were committed anti-racists and led well-run union branches.
Why would a trade union turn against its own activists? All four are well-known members of the Socialist Party. But this provides only part of the explanation; the bureaucracy was also driven by a desire to make the union safe for its full-time machine, and safe for the Labour Party.
This book tells the story of the ultimately victorious campaign and legal challenge that cleared them of all charges, and which exposed the true nature of UNISON’s bureaucracy.

Genoa Strikes! Chronicle of a struggle foretold!

In stock

£4.00
Price incl. VAT, excl delivery

This small pamphlet vividly relates the drama of a five-day, unofficial strike in the Italian city of Genoa in November 2013 - how it was prepared, how it was fought and what it achieved. The process of privatisation and job destruction in public services was resisted and brought to a halt, in spite of politicians and trade union leaders who said such things were inevitable. Of course, this is not the end of the story. Many more battles impend in Genoa and across Italy before a generalised struggle to usher in a socialist society develops.

Members of ControCorrente, the organisation in Italy affiliated to the Committee for a Workers’ International, played an important role in developing this struggle, pointing to importance of leadership and democratic discussion in building the determination and fighting capacity of workers.

Trotsky on World War One

In stock

£9.00
Price incl. VAT, excl delivery

The Russian Revolutionary Leon Trotsky's very extensive writings on World War I, the vast majority of which have been unavailable in English, contain invaluable lessons for socialists and are also essential reading for those studying the history of the period. The 100th anniversary of the start of a war that Trotsky from the start denounced as imperialist, marks a fitting time to begin the publication of his writings from the period. Nearly all material is from two Parisian Russian emigre newspapers, Golos (The Voice) and Nashe Slovo (Our Word), and from the Kievskaya Mysl' (Kieven Thought), a mainstream mass circulation paper published in Kiev.

Apart from the first article, The War and the International, all the articles are translated into English for the first time by Pete Dickenson.
