The Profumo affair was the political scandal of the 20th century. The Tory War Minister, John Profumo, had been having sex with a teenager named Christine Keeler, who had also slept with a Soviet spy. The ensuing investigation revelaved a hidden world in which titled men, politicians and prostitutes cavorted, or orgies and S&M sessions. The revelations rocked the Establishment to its core and weakened the government of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, who resigned soon after. It touched even U.S. President John F. Kennedy. The man at the centre of the storm was Dr. Stephen Ward.
Ward was many things to many people: successful osteopath to innumerable VIPs; a talented artist whose subjects included the greatest names in the land - including Sir Winston Churchill and Prince Philip; a Pygmalion who raised young women from rags to riches; a "provider of popsies to rich people"; a pawn used ruthlessly by MI5 and MI6. And hwne scandal engulfed the government he was made the scapegoat, hounded to death, perhaps murdered.
For the first time, The Secret Worlds of Stephen Ward reveals the names that no previous book dared name, exposes the secrets that could not be told.
