"When I announced I was standing down from Usdaw’s EC due to health problems, one of the union’s members suggested that I write down my experiences as a candidate for the post of general secretary in 2008. This pamphlet is a result of that discussion.
"My fighting programme won over forty percent of the vote and was an even greater achievement when you consider much of the union’s resources were used to oppose me and ensure the incumbent was elected.
"The ballot result represented a massive vote of no confidence in the leadership of Usdaw. Following the election, Usdaw’s leaders panicked and rushed through a rule change which makes it harder for rank and file members to challenge them but this bureaucratic manoeuvring will not stop the struggle for democracy in our union."
