The past year has seen as resurgence of the trade union movement, with one of the largest ever trade union organised demonstrations and large public sector strikes, as well as growing unrest in the private sector. The theme of this pamphlet is the upsurges of the union movement in the past, particularly around the textile industry in West Yorkshire.
Around a hundred and twenty years ago there was the growth of the ‘New Unionism’ as workers in unskilled industry which was thought impossible to organise, proved the opposite of that. Twenty years after that upsurge, after a period which saw the gap between rich and poor increase, a massive strike wave developed for better pay and conditions known today as the ‘Great Unrest’.
